Poindexter Award Dinner

Keynote address 

Aranthan Steven Jones, III, policy director for U.S. House of Representatives Majority Whip James Clyburn (D, ). In 2007, Jones was inducted into the prodigious Stennis Congressional Staff Fellowship for the 110th Congress. In spring 2008, he was inducted into the Hanns Seidel Memorial Foundation fellowship program. He has served as an adviser to more than 15 policy-related Congressional Member Organizations; worked internationally in Nigeria, South Africa, and France; and lectured extensively on a variety of policy issues as well as African American political theory. Jones began his congressional career in 2001 as health policy director for the Congressional Black Caucus.

Poindexter Award

Georges C. Benjamin, MD, FACP, FACEP (E), is well known in the world of public health as a leader, practitioner and administrator. Benjamin has been the executive director of the American Public Health Association (APHA), the nation's oldest and largest organization of public health professionals, since December 2002. He came to that post from his position as secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where he played a key role developing Maryland's bioterrorism plan. Benjamin became secretary of the Maryland health department in April 1999, following four years as its deputy secretary for public health services. As Secretary, Dr. Benjamin oversaw the expansion and improvement in the state’s Medicaid program.

Community Leadership

Denise Adams-Simms, MPH, Former Executive Director California Black Health Network Denise Adams-Simms is the Executive Director of the California Black Health Network, Inc. (CBHN), a non-profit public health organization whose mission is to improve the health status of people of African descent in California by influencing policies and programs that advance health promotion and disease prevention. During her tenure as Executive Director, Mrs. Adams-Simms has actively promoted partnerships and collaborations with state and local government, other community-based organizations and philanthropic entities working to improve the health status of people of color in California.

Representative Louis Stokes Award

Representative Barbara Lee has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1998, representing California's 9th congressional district (map). She is the first woman to represent that district. Lee is the First Vice-Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Lee is notable as the only person in either chamber of Congress who voted against the authorization of use of force following the September 11, 2001 attacks. This made her a hero among the anti-war movement. Lee has been a vocal critic of the Iraq War and supports legislation creating a Department of Peace.
